Did you know that most insurance companies offer discounts on homes with Class 4 impact-rated shingles (UL standard 2218)?
You probably have heard that Class 4 provides the best protection against hail damage, right?
It’s true, they do – as well as offer better wind resistance and protection against algae streaks.
Ranging from Class 1 to 4, with 4 providing the most protection from asphalt shingles, impact-resistant roofs are recommended by us for all residential homeowners looking to replace their roofs or install new ones.
This option raises curb appeal – by lasting longer than other materials – and is a beautiful alternative to slate or shake while holding your home to a higher standard.
Added Durability & Higher Performance
GAF’s Timberline ArmorShield and Grand Sequoia come highly recommended as the most impact-resistant asphalt composition products, which we routinely install.
Notable benefits include:
- Withstand 100+ mph winds
- Longer lifespan, so fewer repairs
- GAF comes with a 30-50+ years warranty
- Added flexibility for wind resistance
- Overall durability and reliability
High-performance products like these are designed with hail storms in mind and undergo impact testing with ice balls on all surface areas – including edges, overlaps, and so on.
Approved products won’t show signs of damage like cracking after this testing.

Let It Hail! – Fort Worth Case Study
Although an article from 2003, “Let It Hail!” is a great resource outlining just how effective an impact-resistant roof is in our area.
The article discusses the development of UL 2218 Class 4 shingles in 1996 – explaining that such products are designed to withstand 90mph steel balls simulating hailstones. Also, whereas Class 4 products made from aluminum, copper and plastic had been on the market for years, modified asphalt shingles were then new – and have become widespread in use and popularity since 1997.
Having witnessed his roof withstand a violent thunderstorm, one Ft. Worth homeowner proudly says this of his IR shingles:
I don’t think about storms anymore. I just let it hail.
